Sorry for the question, but is there any way to disable automatic OS updates?
Unfortunately, version 21.2 still has operational limitations that version 20 didn’t have on local RS4D devices, which is why I’ve had to reinstall version 20 on the units I have to recover the lost functions.
you don’t say what problems are persisting for you, so it is difficult for me to comment one way or the other. but, i can say, that from our perspective, there are no known outstanding issues that we are aware of regarding the latest release, V21.2.
we are here to help but are unable to do so without the specific details of the problem you are experiencing. see this post for guidance on how to best receive technical support. in short, and at a minimum, you will need to describe your issue in detail and provide the latest log files from your Shake instrument.
and, no, it is not possible to disable the automatic updates, for several reasons. i have addressed this the few times this question has come up in the last 10 years, most recently in this post.
quoting myself from the relevant section:
Regarding the automatic updates: First, the Shake is designed and supported as an appliance, not a general-purpose computer. Second, the updates are documented in a few places in the online manual, most obviously as part of the Quick-Start Guide. A change log is available for each release, making all modifications as transparent as possible. Unattended updates are the standard operating model for appliance and IoT types of devices, precisely because user interaction with the underlying OS is neither expected nor reliable. These updates allow us to enhance the system to provide richer functionality over the life-time of the instrument. Not to mention, updating all instruments equally keeps the fleet of Shakes distributed throughout the world all running the same version. Given that we are the party responsible for keeping the Shake up-and-running, applying updates automatically is crucial to the overall health of the global network.
I understand the security issue, but when you have RS4D operating in Stand-Alone Status: On mode with GPS or an NTP server, the ability to directly view the GIF graphics with the components locally is lost ( the menus does not say rs.local/heli anywhere).
Version 20 had a direct link
yes, the link in the FE config app was removed in V21. however, the plots continue to be made in the background and are still available at the same URL as before: http://rs.local/heli
