That big rocket

I saw an article about the huge amount of LF sound the Falcon heavy rocket makes.

I researched when the last launch was and checked a Florida RB on that date.

The RB trace shows the rocket climb out and about 7 minutes later the sonic booms.

There is a recording of this event with good audio (turn up your subwoofer)

The launch is just after 3 minutes and the sonic booms at 6:30.

Enjoy.

Amazing sounds indeed, kpjamro. And the trace on the Florida HDF sensor is very clear.

Thank you for bringing this to the attention of the community!

That RB unit is on the west coast of FL whereas the launch site is on the east coast, I imagine it could be heard father away. Here is the audio spectrum from the YouTube video.

The peak in the spectrum corresponds to a frequency where it is easiest to shake the surface layer of the earth (regolith). That peak may be the result of reinforcement of the propagated sound wave by the earth or just a characteristic of those Falcon Heavy engines - hard to know. Some rocket scientists somewhere probably know the answer).

I suppose part of the answer is that the response for a typical electret microphone starts to roll off at about 10 Hz.
