I have attached a photo of two earthquakes that occurred about 200km from where I am, both in the mag 4 range and shallow. I have circled the signature which is the P and S wave, however, after that, there seems to be another seismic signature that comes in about 2 mins later for each quake and it looks a bit different to the initial earthquake. What could this signature be?
The additional seismic signature appearing about 2 minutes after the main P and S waves could be aftershocks. Aftershocks are smaller earthquakes that follow the main event and occur in the same region. They typically arrive later and can have different waveforms due to their smaller magnitude and different focal mechanisms compared to the main shock. Another possibility is that these signatures could represent seismic waves interacting with local geological structures or surface waves, which may appear distinct from the primary P and S waves. Analyzing the frequency and amplitude of these waves can provide further insights into their nature.
