Remote Upgrade Raspbian 8 to 10

Hi shakers and support
I have a special question/wish and wondering if this might be possible.
Here my installation parameters.
Shake RS3D, Pi3 B+, OS 0.20, Raspbian Gnu Linux 10 (Debian Buster)
Shake RBm , Pi3 B , OS 0.20, Raspbian Gnu Linux 8 (Debian Jessie)
First, I don’t know why I have two different Linux Versions installed, as I created both SD cards nearly the same time. I came from 0.1x and done all online updates.

To keep all my systems up 2 date, I would like to upgrade the Boom Server to Debian 10 (Buster).
Is this possible to copy for example the ISO image to a tmp folder and use a “magic” unix command? I know, flashing a new SD card would be the easiest way, but my Shake is digged in a remote installation and the Boom is “digged” under a bunch of cables :grimacing: And second, I am too lazy to go there up, take all apart, bring it on the bench, still winter here, f… cold and and and… :slightly_smiling_face:
Many thanks for any suggestions and help
Jochen

Hello Jochen, and welcome back to the community!

This sounds like a very interesting conundrum. Off the top of my head, I cannot find a precise reason why you have two different Linux OS versions installed with the conditions you have described.

I have passed your question, and the following one about the OS update, to our software team. I’ll update you as soon as I get news from them.

Hello again Jochen,

Our team replied. Here’s what they recommend:

As you also wrote, the best way to update is to swap the current microSD card with a new one that you have burned with the most recent Shake OS version. This is the only method we can recommend working from start to end.

The alternative would have been to try and do a manual Linux OS update from remote. However, we cannot recommend this method as there is no guarantee that further adjustments will be needed after the update. There is even the possibility that the Shake would not be able to come online again (thus requiring another in-person visit to fine-tune the installation).

That is why we push integral Shake OS updates and not the underlying Linux OS ones only.

If the Shakes continue to work fine, then I would leave them as they are now. Maybe when the season changes and temperatures are more agreeable, you can go there and do the job with the new microSD card.

Hi Giuseppe

Many thanks for your answer and suggestion, I will do so.
But not all is 100% clear for me.
Here’s what’s still not clear for me…

Shake RS3D, Pi3 B+, OS 0.20, Raspbian Gnu Linux 10 (Debian Buster)

  • Some strange behaviour a few month ago, always went offline, no LAN connection, Rebooted it via Power Off with LAN Relais, solved sometimes the problem, had to take it apart, unplug industrial Grade SD, since then it works fine…
  • SSH connection opens very quick, under 1 sec. like all SSH Hosts in my LAN

Boom RBm , Pi3 B , OS 0.20, Raspbian Gnu Linux 8 (Debian Jessie)

  • Running fine, no problems yet
  • SSH connetion takes about 5 seconds to prompt me for the password

So I think I will wait for bether weather and do the SD card replacement job. I also think, maybe later updates 0.2x run bether or maybe need Debian 10 ?!?
Can you confirm, that the latest 0.20 image I download on your webaite uses a Debian Buster(10)? I tryed to open the ISO image and sneaked a bit around but really don’t know where/which file to look to findout the Debian version.
Should I bether put my Boom into a metal box? I read some posts about RF interference into the AD converter and amplifiers and my Boom is sitting in a Aluminium box with a lot of other electronic thinks, especially Solar MPPT tracker…
Many thanks and greetings from Switzerland

Hello again Jochen,

Regarding the unusual Shake behavior, without logs, I can only hypothesize that there was some microSD card corruption, and your replacement (+ re-assembly) fixed it.

I can confirm that our latest Shake OS (v0.20) runs a modified Debian 10 (Buster) release.

It is possible that, for a future Shake OS version, we could be implementing the latest (at the time) Debian release (12+), but there is no current ETA for this to happen.

Regarding your metal RF-shielded box, it depends on how much interference you are getting for that particular instrument. We have a blog post dedicated just to this, so you can take some ideas out of it: Amateur Radio & My RF Shielded Raspberry Shake Vault Experiment.

I have seen a number of installations that had the Shake close to other electronic and RF sources, but interference was negligible in those. Are you seeing the opposite in your case?
