This earthquake yesterday was of particular interest to me. Not only do we have a family connection to Cebu, we were just there a few months ago on vacation. That made my sense of wonder over the sensitivity of this Raspberry Shake at my home greatly magnified. Not only did we capture the event, I have recent experience of our 26-hour door-to-door journey there this summer. This place is a very long way from me, the earth movement that was detected from that location is very small, yet this wonderful device sitting on my garage floor gave me an opportunity to see that event in detail. Well done, Raspberry Shake. Well done.
P.s. I realized after posting that this might sound like I am not acknowledging the loss of life in the Philippines from this earthquake, but I am well aware of the impact. Every EQ of high magnitude has misery associated with it. Given our family connection, this concerned us much more than most. Still, understanding eq’s so we can mitigate their effects is part of this citizen science project, and I admit to being enthusiastic about the potential.
Thanks for sharing FlyingMoose. Our family has been saying the same. Sorry you had to deal with this, we have been watching ABS-CBN news and listening to DYHP to keep up.
One interesting thing is that the high-rise building I’m in has its own seismometers to determine if it needs inspection after an earthquake. One of the staff told me that the magnitude reading here was 5.3. Here is one of the units:
That is a really nice technology. I wasn’t aware it was being used in Cebu. Since we stay in large high-rises when we visit, it’s good to know it exists.
