I would like to us Putty to access the Shake to change some of the parameters. Such as I do not believe the clock is right.

Yes, just type rs.local into the box asking for Host Name and away you go.

i would like to understand what you mean by “… do not believe the clock is right”. what makes you think this is the case?

all shakes run vs. UTC, i.e., not local time, and are set using NTP. if the clock is really not right, this could mean that your machine does not have proper access to the internet at large, which is a bigger problem than just resetting the clock by hand.

if the clock is indeed wrong, please download (from the front-end home page) and send back the log files so we can have a look at what the issue could be.
