Greeting, RS users.
My organization recently purchased two standard education packages, which we intend to install at local schools. We recently placed one unit at a local school, but are having trouble connecting to the internet.
The school only has captive portal networks. We can use the credentials of a teacher to log into the network. However, the network setup page only allows entry of a password and not any other authentication information. I was briefly able to connect the shake to the internet using my phone WiFi hotspot.
Is there a way to connect our Raspberry Shake to the school captive portal network? Does anyone have experience of making this work? I would much appreciate any insight you might have on this!

Hello AtomicPunk, and welcome to the community!
Thanks for reaching out with your query.
As of now, Raspberry Shake devices can’t directly connect to networks that use a browser-based login via captive portal.
The best solution is to contact the school’s IT administrator to request a network exception or alternative connection method, such as:
- Whitelisting the Shake’s IP/MAC address(es) so it can bypass the captive portal, or
- Providing a dedicated subnet or network SSID without captive authentication.
Until then, using a mobile hotspot (as you tested) or an Ethernet connection to an open network would be the only ways to get the Shake online.
If the IT admin asks for more details, a list of all ports that need to be open so that the Shake can work properly can be found here.
