Centering Waveform of Geophone

Hi, is this normal for geophone, I see this waveform is not in the center, or how to make the center of the geophone to 0?

thank you all.

Hello hakim, welcome to our community!

If I’m not wrong, that’s the phase picker on Seiscomp’s scolv.

You should be able to detrend/demean the waveform (so that it is aligned with a 0 on the y-axis) by using an RMHP function: Filter Grammar — SeisComP Release documentation.

You should find some pre-set filters in scolv “Filter” menu, or you can add your custom ones by going to “Settings”.

Hi Stormchaser, yes this is a scolv from seiscomp,

Yes, if you filter it, the waveform will be centered, but if you don’t filter it, you will see the recording from the raspberryshake geophone above zero, will this affect the magnitude calculation or will it affect other parameters. or is the raspberryshake geophone normal like this? i attached the compared image.

thank you.

Hello hakim,

Usually, different seismic sensors will have different offsets (that you have noticed in scolv), and this offset is not the same for all instruments.

You can rest assured that, even if you calculate the magnitude without filtering, the offset will not affect the calculations.

thank you Stormchaser,
