Cannot Retrieve Waveform data past Mid January 2026 for ANY shakes via obspy

I have been trying for hours to retrieve waveform data for stations before 2026 within California to no avail. I am incredibly frustrated; every attempt I make is met with: “FDSNNoDataException: No data available for request.
HTTP Status code: 204
Detailed response of server:”

Over and over again, I check to see the data ranges for the stations in Python; surely enough, they are running at the times I’m requesting data for.

Can someone tell me what’s going on? I’ve tried every client I could find (RASPISHAKE, etc), read the articles on archived data, and I just cannot get through. I desperately need this data for my research project.

Hello DA.quake23, and welcome to our community!

First, let me reassure you that the data is not missing or lost. I’ve forwarded your notification (thank you for it!) to our server team, and they are actively looking into it.

I’ll update you as soon as I have news.

We do apologize for the issue, particularly at this juncture in your research.

Hello again DA.quake23,

Our server team has just reported that this issue has been fixed, and you should now be able to download older data from our FDSNWS.

When you have a moment, could you check again?

Thank you.

Hello Stormchaser,

Thank you so much for notifying the server team of the issue. I am now able to retrieve data from 2023 onward; however, data before 2023 remains an issue. Instead of returning code 204, I receive code 504, a gateway timeout. I have ensured that my request is very specific so the server doesn’t search across multiple streams, but I still can’t retrieve any data. I have attached an image of the error I’m receiving.

Thank you for your assistance.

Hello DA.quake23,

I have passed this new issue notification to the team, and I know they are working on it.

They’ll update you as soon as the data you are looking for becomes available again.

Our renewed apology for this continued issue.

Just received word that data < 2023 should now be available via FDSN (and also DataView).

I have made some test queries using random Shakes and date/times, and everything seems fine.

If you encounter other download issues, please provide (even in private, if needed) the query URL (or query parameters) you are using so we can try to recreate it on our end.

Hope this can help!
