Cannot connect to rs.local at a new location

Hello, Shakers.

I have a RS 1D that worked perfectly for months. After moving it to a new location, I was unable to access the rs.local server to configure new location and Wi-Fi settings. I am using an ethernet connection. The computer is detecting the device, but the server is not reachable. I tried using a mobile hotspot too, but it didn’t work.

Today I returned the shake at the old location, connected it, and rs.local opened normally. I am using the same computer.

Has anybody had a case like this? Any insight would be appreciated.I am attaching the log files that I downloaded once I moved the shake back.

Thanks for your assistance!

Hello AtomicPunk30,

First, thank you for the logs!

Some questions:

  1. In the setup situation where the Shake does work, are you using a static IP?
  2. Would it be possible for you to reboot the Shake when the instrument doesn’t connect, wait for about 2-3 hours, download the new logs and send them to me?
  3. Have you tried, in the new setup, to access rs.local/ using the IP address of the Shake (which can be retrieved from the router admin panel, or using an app like Fing).

Thank you for your collaboration.

Hello, Stormchaser!

Thank you for your reply.

  1. I was not using a static IP at the initial location where the shake worked without issues.
  2. I will try to get the new logs for you.
  3. I tried to access the shake through the IP, but ran into the same issue - server unavailable. I have a windows machine, so I used PuTTy ssh client to retrieve the IP address.

Hello AtomicPunk30,

Thank you for the new details. Some more questions:

  • What are the details of the “new location” you mentioned, exactly? Is it in the same LAN, or different LANs across a WAN? Or a different network altogether?
  • Do you know if there are (and if yes, what are the) subnet differences between the two networks and the computer you are trying to access them from?
  • For the non-working situation, if the Shake and the computer are on two different networks, do you have a bridge between the two, and if so, what are the connection details?

With the above, we are trying to understand all the network details of the two setups, so that we can identify differences and probably gain insight into why the new location is not working.

If you deem it so, you can send all details via private message; there’s no trouble.

Thank you!

I will do my best to answer your questions:

  1. The new location is a school and it is a completely different LAN network.
  2. I am not sure about the subnet differences but for what it’s worth, I have installed RS1D units at 3 other schools and have had no issues. The schools all have the same network provider and should essentially have the same network configurations. I have worked with the school administration to have the required firewall ports opened, so that technically should not be an issue.
  3. I am using the same computer in all cases and an Ethernet connection between the shake and the computer. With the Shake connected, I have tried connecting the computer to the school WiFi as well as a mobile hotspot, but I was not able to access rs.local with either network.

The last Idea I have is to perform a factory reset on the shake to see if that will resolve the issue. If you have any other ideas, it would be much appreciated.

Thank you for your help!

Thank you for all the additional details AtomicPunk.

Could you ask that specific school’s IT admin to check again if port 80 is open? That port is required to access rs.local/, and while it is usually already open on other networks, schools’ firewalls could block it by default.

If they confirm that the port is open, could you do the following?

In your browser:

  1. Press F12 to display the debug console
  2. Select the networking tab
  3. Do a hard refresh with CTRL-F5 (or Mac equivalent)
  4. Screenshot the output and send it to me.

You’re more than welcome!
