Hello!
I’m just curious, what the are the advantages of purchasing an RS, considering that live data can already be accessed through StationView and the ShakeNet app?
Thank you in advance for your response.

Hello k8acirer,
That’s a great question! While it’s true that you can access data from other Raspberry Shake stations through StationView, DataView, our FDSN service, and the ShakeNet app, having your own Raspberry Shake offers several unique advantages:
You’ll get precise data about seismic activity in your specific location, which is always valuable, from any part of the world.
You become part of the world’s largest earthquake citizen science community, contributing real data to the Raspberry Shake global seismic network.
Having your Shake vs reading data from another one in the neighbourhood means:
. Real-time access to your local data in case nearby stations go offline
. Higher resolution data from your specific location
. The ability to detect smaller, local events that other stations might not pick up
You also help fill in potential gaps in your local/regional network, and such increased station density is optimal for a wide range of research opportunities (collaborative projects, peer-reviewed studies, and more!)
Having your own Shake also means increasing your local to very local detection capabilities, that is, monitoring more events than just earthquakes, such as local construction works, traffic (both on road and railway), general urban activity, and many other vibration sources.
And, finally, the joy of having your own seismograph at home!
I hope this little bullet point list has provided the answers you were seeking. For anything else, we remain available as usual.
