Hi,
I have another unit that I lent to a fellow researcher, and now I cannot connect to it using default settings. My colleague states that he did not change any IP settings,
In any case, I searched on your website and found the link that should help in this exact case (Discovery IP)
https://manual.raspberryshake.org/discoveryIP.html
- I set my laptop (running Ubuntu 24.04) IP address to 169.254.8.15
- Connected the RS&BOOM cable directly to laptop ethernet port
- Tried ping rs.local (no response, name or service unknown)
- Even replaced Ethernet cable and connected directly to the port on the RasberryPi pcb
What can I try to do next?

Hello,
The fact that you are unable to communicate with the Shake even after setting everything up could indicate some other issues, like microSD card corruption.
Can you check if the Shake LEDs follow this pattern when the unit starts up? Technical Specifications
And, if not, where the behavior deviates?
Also, when you connected the Shake to the laptop, did the LAN LEDs on the Raspberry Pi board light up with the green flashing and the orange solid?
Thank you.
Thanks for the link. Stormchaser, since I suspected it was a corrupted SD card.
The top LED is solid blue, Ras-Pi LED is solid red. The Ethernet ports LEDs green and amber are off. Please let me know about the next step since it sounds like I will have to reinstall the OS.
Thanks,
George

I followed the directions with formatting and installing a new SD card, but the green LED does not come at all. I tried multiple SD cards and even other power supplies to eliminate any other parts that may cause the problem.
To verify that I was doing the new card OS ininstallation, repeated the same steps on another RS unit a, andt worked just fine, and it was running on a brand new SD card.
Please let me know if you have other suggestions on what to try next.
Thanks,
George

Hello George,
Thank you for the additional troubleshooting. I was going to recommend testing a different power supply (and more microSD cards), but you have anticipated me.
At this point, as you also have tested different ethernet cables, the Raspberry Pi board may likely be the reason why the Shake is not working.
I would recommend trying to install the official Raspberry Pi OS (https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/operating-systems/) on a new microSD card and see if, when connected to a standard internet router, the lights on the ethernet port turn on. If not, then the Raspberry Pi board will have to be replaced.
Hi Stormchase,
I forgot to mention that in my email last night, but I already tried different network cables and I also tried running in Raspberry Pi OS which did not work.
I guess I will order a new model 3 B+ and try to see if that will fix the problem.
Please let me know if you have any other suggestions.
Thanks a lot for your help,
George

Hello George,
In light of your further tests, Iād say that the issue is likely to be the Raspberry Pi board.
When you change it, your Shake should be up and running again. Remember that, according to our Naming Convention, your Shake name will change with the new Pi board.
Always welcome.
