Long cable GPS

Hello,
I am searching for long GPS cable solution, around 15-20 meters. I have found that the original GPS module is GPS receiver with built-in antenna. It uses USB, and in short, extended USB cable is poor idea. As far as I know the coaxial cable (antenna cable) has less length limitations and should allow to put antena15-20 meters from GPS receiver. So, my question is: does anyone of you know of-the-shelf solution, for example RS compatible GPS module with an external antenna?
Thanks in advance for any help

Hello Marcin, welcome to our community!

Yes, our GPS module would not be compatible with this modification. I think the best compromise you can implement would be still use our GPS and add a GPS repeater to extend its range. This should give you the required distance to acquire a good signal for the Shake to use.

Otherwise, you’ll need to do some DIY work with a different GPS module, but bear in mind that some tweaks may be required to make it work.

This is because there are numerous different GPS makers/models available on the market. While we have tested several, we ultimately recommend our module because we know it works best with our specific combination of software and hardware.

You can try to see if your GPS module is recognized (https://manual.raspberryshake.org/ntp.html#case3), but you will likely have to look around a bit and come up with a compatible solution if you want to use it.

Lastly, if anyone in the community has more knowledge about this, let us know! We’re all here to learn new things in the end.

Hello Stormchaser,
Thanks for advice. I think I’ll use workaround with ruter/modem device. I have tested Teltonika RUT956, it can act as a NTP server based on its own GPS module with an external antenna. Then I’ll simply need to connect RUT956 via ethernet and set proper NTP sever address on RS3D. This should do the trick for something like several tens of meters.

But maybe you should consider to add “Long cable GPS” option to your offer in the future.

That sounds like a good idea, also for other Shakers who may be reading this topic.

And thank you for the feedback, I’ll pass it to our team so they have it on their radar.
